Announcements for the week of March 6, 2011

Lent starts on Ash Wednesday with services at 12:00 noon and 7:00 p.m. The following Wednesday, March 16 our Simple Suppers begin at 6:00 p.m. followed with worship at 7:00 p.m. We are in need of groups and/or individuals to host a supper. If you would like to help out, contact Pastor or the church office.
Lenten devotionals from LAMP (Lutheran Association of Missionaries and Pilots) are available on the glass case in the chapel. Feel free to pick one up.

This Lenten season The Light Shines in the Darkness and The Journey Continues are Lutheran Hour Ministries’ 2011 devotional offerings. Each message conveys the powerful message of this church season-but in different ways. The Light Shines in the Darkness follows the beloved words of John’s Gospel as he details the life of Jesus the Victorious Savior, who defeats the forces of darkness to rise from the tomb on the third day. In The Journey Continues the video blog (vlog) format begun in Over the Static is again used. This time it’s Jordan’s sister Kate and his best friend Jack who share their observations about life, death, relationships and a love that goes beyond the grave. The Light Shines in the Darkness will be available at www.lentendevotions.net as a daily readable, downloadable, printable and customizable offering. An audio version will be available beginning March 9. The Light Shines in the Darkness is also available as an e-mail subscription. The Journey Continues is available online at www.lentendevotions.net where it can be read, printed, downloaded and customized. The Journey Continues can be accessed as video blog (vlog) by going to www.overthestatic.com.

March & April Special Mission Envelopes are designated for the Christian charity “Food for the Poor”. This is an organization that feeds over 2 million hungry children and adults in Central America and the Caribbean every day. In addition, they build shelters, fund orphanages, aid educational efforts, dig water wells, and help in many other areas in countries where poverty is a way of life. Our former minister, Rev. Daniel Otto works with this charity, and we were priviledged to have Pastor Hanson at our church last week to tell us about this mission. Please keep this project in your prayers over the next couple of months.

OUR PENNY WAR begins next week, March 13, and will continue through Lent. Awards will be announced on Easter in Sunday School. Our Sunday School will be divided into three armies as we “battle” to raise money for Lutheran World Relief. This year we are in a war against the evils of persecution and poverty. We hope to raise at least $530, which will provide 200 health kits containing basic toiletry items such as soap, toothbrushes, towels, and washcloths. These items are shipped daily to refugees throughout the world who have been forced to leave their homes due to war and persecution. Start saving your change, and let the war begin!
