Announcements for October 28, 2018

LUTHERAN SCHOOL SUPPORT:  Today is the last opportunity to support Lutheran education at St. John and Holy Ghost schools with your October Mission envelopes.  Many of our congregational families have taken advantage of the quality education provided by these two schools, and we have members who teach at both schools.  Please keep these families and schools in your prayers, and consider this opportunity to step up and support Christian education by placing your special mission envelopes in the offering plate before the end of October.  Lutheran schools make a difference in the life of a child, especially in today’s world where Christian beliefs are rapidly losing acceptance, and behaviors that are clearly contrary to God’s Word are now celebrated and encouraged.  Your generosity will contribute to the continued success of these schools as they guide and teach our students.

HARVEST FOOD COLLECTION:  We are accepting donations of non-perishable food items which will be used to support our local food pantry.  All donations are appreciated.  Especially needed are peanut butter, jelly, tuna, cereal, pasta and sauce, and canned fruit and vegetables.  Your gifts will be distributed to Niagara Falls families in need during the Christmas season.  HAMS & FROZEN TURKEYS are also needed to help provide holiday meals.  Donations can be stored in our downstairs kitchen.  If you need help carrying your donation, please ask an usher for assistance.

SUNDAY SCHOOL PARENTS:  Please make every effort to have your children in Sunday School each week.  We have already started learning our music for the Christmas program on December 16th, and will soon be fitting costumes and working on learning reading parts.  Also, please mark your calendars for November 11th when all Sunday School children will sing in church, and Saturday, December 15th when we will hold our Christmas pageant rehearsal from 10 AM – 12 PM.  Your support is appreciated!

Grace Ladies will be hosting an ELECTION DAY BAKE SALE on November 6th from 9 AM till Sold Out!  Baked good donations may be brought to Church on Monday, November 5th between 6 PM – 7PM.

ALTAR FLOWERS represent the Luther Rose, to observe Reformation today.  The design is representative of Martin Luther’s Theology:

Black – faith in the Crucified
Red heart – where faith is held, kept aliv
White rose – color of the spirits & angels; for joy, comfort, peace
Sky blue field – heavenly joy in the future
Golden ring – precious, valuable; blessedness in heaven lasts forever, has no end

This past weekends RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE collected 14 donations that will go on to help save up to 42 lives!  The next blood drive will be held on December 22nd and presenting donors will receive a free long-sleeve Red Cross T-shirt.

THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF NORTH GERMAN SETTLEMENTS IN WNY will have their Plattdeutsch (Low German) discussion on Wednesday, October 31st at 12 PM.  Due to the colder weather, we will meet at the Wheatfield Community Center, 2790 Church Road.  The public is invited.  “Komm” and enjoy the fun.  Did you know that Low German was once the primary language of an immense trade empire, the Hanseatic League, that reached all the way from England to Russia?

WITHDRAWING IRAs wisely typically involves careful income tax planning and timing to avoid unnecessary taxable ordinary income. IRAs can facilitate lifetime charitable gifts for account holders over 70 ½ experiencing required minimum distributions.  For all IRA holders, it is effective to designate unused portions of IRAs for charitable purposes, like our mission, when earthly life is complete. These beneficiary designations must be planned during life, however, to avoid tax.
