Announcements for 12/9/18

HELP IS NEEDED AFTER WORSHIP TODAY:   Decorations that will help us celebrate the birth of our Savior will be put up in the sanctuary immediately following worship.  Help is needed to arrange the nativity figures, and put up and decorate our trees.  Please plan to stay and help decorate your church.  With enough assistance, it will only take an hour of your time.

NIAGARA FALLS MEALS ON WHEELS has been designated for our December special mission envelopes.  This is a local program that is not connected to any other “Meals On Wheels” agencies, which means that they are able to offer assistance to those in our city that would otherwise fall through the cracks.  Their staff of four minimum wage workers and several volunteers deliver nutritious meals to elderly and disabled that cannot shop or cook for themselves.  If you are able to support their mission, please place your special mission envelope in the offering plate before the end of December.

NEXT SUNDAY OUR SUNDAY SCHOOL CHRISTMAS PAGEANT will be held during worship.  Students should arrive at the usual Sunday School time of 9 AM.  Also, students and choir members should plan to ATTEND OUR ONLY FULL REHEARSAL ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 15th, from 10 AM – 12 PM, ending with a pizza lunch for participants (choir please be here by 10:30 AM).

OUR ADVENT GIVING TREES are set up in the narthex and chapel.  We are supporting several local agencies through this project.  If you wish to participate, please take a tag off the trees, purchase the item requested, and return it unwrapped to the tree tables.  All items will be distributed in January to our neighbors in need.

HATS AND MITTENS:  In addition to the items listed on our Giving Tree, hats, gloves, and mittens are always needed as we head into the cold winter months ahead.  Many children and homeless adults from our inner city areas lack these items to help keep them warm.

THANK YOU:  November Special Mission envelopes, along with a donation from the Social Minstries’ budget and matching funds from Thrivent, resulted in being able to donate $1372 to LCMS Disaster Relief as they continue to assist after the California fires and other recent disasters around our country.  Thank you for your generosity toward our neighbors in need.

Announcements for October 28, 2018

LUTHERAN SCHOOL SUPPORT:  Today is the last opportunity to support Lutheran education at St. John and Holy Ghost schools with your October Mission envelopes.  Many of our congregational families have taken advantage of the quality education provided by these two schools, and we have members who teach at both schools.  Please keep these families and schools in your prayers, and consider this opportunity to step up and support Christian education by placing your special mission envelopes in the offering plate before the end of October.  Lutheran schools make a difference in the life of a child, especially in today’s world where Christian beliefs are rapidly losing acceptance, and behaviors that are clearly contrary to God’s Word are now celebrated and encouraged.  Your generosity will contribute to the continued success of these schools as they guide and teach our students.

HARVEST FOOD COLLECTION:  We are accepting donations of non-perishable food items which will be used to support our local food pantry.  All donations are appreciated.  Especially needed are peanut butter, jelly, tuna, cereal, pasta and sauce, and canned fruit and vegetables.  Your gifts will be distributed to Niagara Falls families in need during the Christmas season.  HAMS & FROZEN TURKEYS are also needed to help provide holiday meals.  Donations can be stored in our downstairs kitchen.  If you need help carrying your donation, please ask an usher for assistance.

SUNDAY SCHOOL PARENTS:  Please make every effort to have your children in Sunday School each week.  We have already started learning our music for the Christmas program on December 16th, and will soon be fitting costumes and working on learning reading parts.  Also, please mark your calendars for November 11th when all Sunday School children will sing in church, and Saturday, December 15th when we will hold our Christmas pageant rehearsal from 10 AM – 12 PM.  Your support is appreciated!

Grace Ladies will be hosting an ELECTION DAY BAKE SALE on November 6th from 9 AM till Sold Out!  Baked good donations may be brought to Church on Monday, November 5th between 6 PM – 7PM.

ALTAR FLOWERS represent the Luther Rose, to observe Reformation today.  The design is representative of Martin Luther’s Theology:

Black – faith in the Crucified
Red heart – where faith is held, kept aliv
White rose – color of the spirits & angels; for joy, comfort, peace
Sky blue field – heavenly joy in the future
Golden ring – precious, valuable; blessedness in heaven lasts forever, has no end

This past weekends RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE collected 14 donations that will go on to help save up to 42 lives!  The next blood drive will be held on December 22nd and presenting donors will receive a free long-sleeve Red Cross T-shirt.

THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF NORTH GERMAN SETTLEMENTS IN WNY will have their Plattdeutsch (Low German) discussion on Wednesday, October 31st at 12 PM.  Due to the colder weather, we will meet at the Wheatfield Community Center, 2790 Church Road.  The public is invited.  “Komm” and enjoy the fun.  Did you know that Low German was once the primary language of an immense trade empire, the Hanseatic League, that reached all the way from England to Russia?

Come and be Informed!  TWO TALKS BY BIBLICAL ARCHAEOLOGIST RON E. TAPPY at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 107 Scott St, Tonawanda, NY 14150. Dr. Tappy is the G. Albert Shoemaker Professor of Bible and Archaeology at the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. He also serves as the project director and principal investigator of the Zeitah Excavations. The expedition that discovered the Tel Zayit Abecedary, the oldest known complete Hebrew alphabetic inscription.  He was the featured archaeologist in NOVA special “The Bible’s Buried Secrets.”  Saturday, November 3rd at 11 AM and 1:30 PM. Free Parking and admission.

WITHDRAWING IRAs wisely typically involves careful income tax planning and timing to avoid unnecessary taxable ordinary income. IRAs can facilitate lifetime charitable gifts for account holders over 70 ½ experiencing required minimum distributions.  For all IRA holders, it is effective to designate unused portions of IRAs for charitable purposes, like our mission, when earthly life is complete. These beneficiary designations must be planned during life, however, to avoid tax. For more information, contact Robert Wirth, LCMS Foundation Gift Planner @ robert.wirth (at) lfnd (dot) org or 716-863-4427.

FFP’s The Rev. Bruce E. Rudolf Coming April 29, 2018

The Rev. Bruce Rudolf, who is representing the ministry of Food for the Poor in our Church today, has been a pastor of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod for over 50 years, having been ordained in 1966. He served congregations in Rockville Conn., Newton  NJ, and for 20 years was Pastor of Emanuel Lutheran Church and School in Patchogue NY, from which he retired in 2004. He is presently the pastor at SonRise Lutheran Church in the Adirondacks.

He’s been married to Dorothy for 54 years and our Lord has blessed their marriage with six children, four born to them, a fifth, an African-American adopted daughter, and a sixth, a Vietnamese foster son. Now God has given them eight terrific grandchildren.

Food for the Poor is among the largest international relief and development ministries in the U.S. and seeks to support missionaries and ministries serving in the Caribbean and Latin America. It is distinguished by providing more than 96% of every dollar donated directly to the needy and has received the highest evaluation from the Better Business Bureau and three other charitable “watch dog” organizations. Pastor Rudolf has participated in field trips to Haiti four times (most recently this past June), as well as Nicaragua, Jamaica and Honduras, visiting a number of ministries assisted by FFP and other sites they are considering helping. He has represented their ministry to about 250 LCMS congregations in 32 different states around the country.

Announcements for April 15, 2018

Newsletter Party: Please join us Wednesday, April 25th at Noon to assemble The Gleanings! Many hands make light work! No technical ability needed, we will be folding and applying the address labels so that The Gleanings can be mailed on time.

Food for the Poor and the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod have much in common. In a number of countries in the Caribbean and Latin America where both the LCMS and Food for the Poor are engaged Food for the Poor has assisted the work of our church. 9 Lutheran schools in Guatemala were aided by FFP under the guidance of the Lutheran Church of Guatemala Pastor Bruce Rudolf, a LCMS pastor, will be with us on April 29th to speak about this ministry.

APRIL SPECIAL MISSION ENVELOPES have been designated to establish a Benevolence Fund at Grace.  This fund will be an ongoing resource for Pastor Bahr’s use in his ministry for emergency situations he may encounter, such as an immediate need for food, gasoline, payment of a utility bill, overnight housing, etc.  Often when this type of need arises, it is of an urgent nature.  Having a Benevolence Fund available will ensure that those in need of assistance can receive the help they require.  If you would like to assist in establishing this fund, please place your special mission envelope in the offering plate during April.  Benevolence Fund envelopes located in the chapel and narthex may also be used to donate to this fund.

The Historical Society of North German Settlements will meet Thursday, April 19, at  7 P.M. at the Wheatfield Community Center, St. Johnsburg.  The video about our North German communities, that was filmed here and shown on German television, has been translated to English.  We will be viewing it on large screen, so come and enjoy!

GRACE LADIES would like to invite the congregation to a Soup Supper on April 24th @ 6pm, with Guest Speaker Chet Ferry, The Bread Man, who will be sharing his “Bread-time Stories”. Each guest will also receive a homemade loaf of bread. Please sign up on the Glass-Case by April 15th to ensure there is enough bread and soup for everyone!
