Announcements for 3/8

LENT 2:  This week “Sleepy Eyes” is the theme for the second week of Lent.  In Gethsemane, Jesus’ inner circle of Peter, James, and John cannot keep their eyes open to watch and pray with Jesus for even an hour, while Jesus comes to see that His Father’s will is that He drink the cup of God’s wrath when He comes to the “hour” of His suffering.

LAST CHANCE TO SIGN UP–Today is the deadline to sign up if you plan to attend YOUNG LIFE’S annual fundraising dinner, scheduled for Thursday, March 26, beginning at 6:15 PM at Classics V on Niagara Falls Boulevard.  A signup sheet is located on the glass case.  There is no charge to attend this dinner, however if you wish to support Young Life, donations will be accepted during the event.  Please see Dick Crawford for more information on Young Life or this annual event.

PENNY WAR:  This year we are participating in OPERATION STARFISH through Food for the Poor.  Every $75 we raise will feed one starving child in a developing country for one year.  There are several opportunities to support this mission, including our March Special Mission envelopes, and Loose Change Sunday on March 22.  You may also donate your spare change to the Penny War jar which is located on the glass case, or give a donation to one of our Sunday School children for their class banks.  Watch for updates as we continue our project throughout Lent.

SPECIAL MISSION ENVELOPES for March have been designated to support our Penny War mission, Operation Starfish.  If you would like to support our Sunday School project in this way, please place your special mission envelope in the offering plate before the end of March, or donate to “special mission” online.

SUNDAY SCHOOL MILK JUG HAPPENINGS:  Each week during our Penny War, we take a few minutes to talk about the purpose of mission projects and discover what life is like in developing countries.  Today your milk jug donations (filled with water) were used to help our students experience first hand how difficult it is to carry needed water long distances, as is done by children in remote villages on a daily basis.  Thank you for helping us with your donations.

ATTENTION THRIVENT MEMBERS:  If you have a Thrivent policy or investment, you may have Choice Dollars available from 2019.  Choice Dollars are dollars Thrivent will donate to a charity of your choice, including Grace if desired.  But 2019 dollars need to be designated by 3/31 or you will lose them, so don’t delay.  Log on to Thrivent and choose “Thrivent Choice Dollars”, then follow the directions to designate Grace or another charity.

SOCIAL MINISTRIES has a meeting scheduled for today after worship with a light lunch included.  New members are welcome.  We meet five times a year and meetings last about an hour.

DO YOU LIKE TO EAT?  Our non-profit, Help and Hope For Homeless, Inc, has a ” Dine to Donate” fundraiser at the Texas Roadhouse in Tonawanda. It takes place on Tuesday, March 17 and goes from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM. You would give our flyer to your server and we will receive 15% of your total food and beverage costs from your bill. Thank you for your support of our fundraiser. Flyers are on the glass case in the fellowship hall. Any questions please see John Loss

LENT 1:  This week, we look through Judas’s “Betraying Eyes” and learn why he did this awful deed.  Yet the behind-the-scenes-reality is that Jesus was “handed over” (another way of translating the verb for “betray”) by God the Father Himself, so that Jesus could die for the sin of the world.

ANNUAL BATHROOM TISSUE COLLECTION:  Tables available in the chapel and narthex through February to receive donations of toilet tissue.  Heart, Love, & Soul tells us it is one of their most requested (but least donated) items, and their supply is CRITICALLY low at the present time.  This is something that all of us use daily and most of us take for granted (until we run out, that is).  But it cannot be purchased with EBT cards (formerly called food stamps), so those living in poverty in our city often have difficulty providing this item for their families.  Your gifts will help our neighbors in need maintain their dignity.  Thank you for helping with this mission.

YOUR GENEROUS DONATIONS to our January mission, along with matching funds from the Social Ministries’ budget line, allowed us to send a check for $825 to our local Young Life organization.  Grace will appear as a full page sponsor in their annual fundraising dinner brochure.    Thank you for supporting this Christian group that is doing wonderful work with our local youth.

HELP NEEDED:  We are in need of one or more volunteers to trim and send donated postage stamps to the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML).  LWML is able to use these stamps to raise funds for the many mission projects they support.  This is a task that can be done from the comfort of your home.  If you are interested in assisting with this project or have questions, please speak to Erika Tuscher.

A NOTE FROM PASTOR BAHR: By the time you read this note, we’ll be in sunny Florida visiting a certain mouse. Perhaps you didn’t know we were going? That’s because Lacey and I decided to surprise our boys with a secret vacation, and since they’re in church every week, we couldn’t say anything! (A special challenge was cancelling Confirmation this week – since John is in the class.) Having packed their bags clandestinely, we picked them up from what they believed was a normal day of school on Friday and, rather than go home, we went to the airport to catch our flight. I look forward to sharing their reaction with you. We’ll be back late Saturday and see you in church next week. Special thanks to Pastor Emeritus Erv Brese for standing in for me at worship today.

The ALTAR FLOWERS, week by week, are a welcome offering to our worship. Flowers are alive. They are of God’s creation. They are a fragrant offering to the God who created them. They are a symbol of new life in Christ. For all of these reasons, we give thanks to everyone who is moved to give flowers on a particular Sunday. People have given flowers in thanksgiving to God for a family member’s birthday, wedding anniversary, or other blessing. They are also given in memory of a departed loved one or friend.  A flower chart is located in the narthex where available Sunday dates are listed.  The church office will then contact you to obtain your preference in color(s), size (centerpiece/$43 or two (2) vases/$54) and your personalized bulletin announcement.

DONATIONS FOR SNACK.  Every Sunday, after our lesson and before music, we give the students a little snack.  At this time we could use donations of drinks (juice boxes, mini water bottles, etc.).  Please feel free to leave donated beverages near the water cooler in the chapel.
